b. permafrost

[it's freezing.

but the cold's never bothered kaeya anyway, especially not as a sapphire gembonded with a cryo vision. it's funny, in a way, how the gods have given him such an unyielding, mirthless, bleak element to bond to. but he supposes it's just as well, right? in the end, he is unyielding, mirthless, and bleak. a man who has hurt all those he loves. a man who has been left behind each and every single time. a man who is destined to become something inhuman and unlovable.

he knew this would happen eventually, and he was naïve to fall complacent. waking up every morning tangled in the arms of the man he loved, whining whenever said man wished to leave the warmth of their bed together. every morning (or at least most), kaeya would coax roman to stay a little longer, where they would sometimes fall back asleep, cozy and in love.

and those halcyon days are no longer.

when he realized roman was gone - actually gone - he'd dropped to his knees and screamed at the gods who've never once looked upon him with kindness. his gembond and vision reacted to the rawness of his emotions, water and ice forming around their once cozy house, every memory frozen in permafrost, never to be forgotten.

he could feel himself shifting, his limbs darkening at the ends, scales forming on his skin, dark and lost of all its usual luster. the whites of his eyes blackened as well, and he knows he's become that which he was afraid of the most: becoming a vicious beast without anyone around to kill him.

so he stays confined in his home, now fortified in ice, a protective barrier from reality but also to protect those outside from his ferality.

perhaps you come across his curious ice cocoon upon your exploration of amani, thinking it part of the landscape and coming inside to further explore. perhaps you simply haven't heard from kaeya in a while, and have come to check up on him. either way, you'll find him within, grief-striken, beastial, and unrecognizable.]
